Once upon a time, in a land far from the borders of Equestria, there was a kingdom, full of wonderful creatures and beautiful lands. It was ruled by a king and his queen who were very much beloved by their subjects, and had a single beautiful daughter who they treasure with all their hearts. The princess had many suitors, the most persistent of which being an orphan colt who was only known as "Nameless". Nameless proclaimed his love for the princess day and night; he accomplished whatever feat he thought might impress her and did whatever it took to get her attention. All was for naught, as the princess already had eyes for another; A stallion of noble upbringing who had enchanted her with stories of love and fantasy. Heartbroken and despairing, Nameless became so bitter and jealous that he devoted himself to the art of dark magic, consumed with hatred for all other ponies.
On the night of the princess and her husband's anniversary and the first day of spring, a dark mist surrounded the castle. It spread and thickened until the air was thick and heavy, choking out all light and sound from the celebration.
When the mist cleared, everyone was gone - leaving only ash behind them.
Nameless claimed the crown using force and terror to gain loyalty and submission from his subjects. He ruled with little regard to anything except expanding his kingdom and making it - and himself - more wealthy. He was harsh with all punishments, with no crime or mischief of any kind being tolerated. It was not uncommon for a pony to be banished for sneaking out past curfew or trespassing in the castle. All the people lived in fear of their cruel and bitter king.
But for all his powers, Nameless was not immortal. There came the day when he too took his last breath and closed his eyes forever - leaving only a curse which occurred every year on the anniversary of the day that the princess and her family vanished. Two chosen sacrifices, the "princess" and the "groom" were chosen every year to satisfy the curse - the only thing that prevented the entire kingdom from being overcome with the mist.
Without a king to unite the people, they were quickly divided. Those who believed that one day, the old rulers and ways would rises from ashes again to return the kingdom to its peaceful state, named themselves the Pheonixes. Those who believed in continuing and enforcing their current way of living called themselves the Steel Guard, for they would not bend or break their laws. The two sides fought at the cost of many lives, until finally the Steel Guard were forced to back down. A decision was made that each year, a young member of each side was to become a sacrifice - the Pheonixes treated their sacrifice as royalty and proclaimed them a prince or princess, answering their every wish and demand - while the Steel Guard looked upon their sacrifice as a symbol of bad luck and often alienated them. The two sacrifices were kept separate and often never met until they were "married" on the last day of winter.
And so it went, year after year, until it became a normal part of life in the kingdom. The Steel Guard formed the lower class and the majority of the military and working positions. The Pheonixes were the nobles and wealthy citizens, with the neutral population filling in the remaining classes. Two hundred years later, nothing has changed. The story of Nameless and the princess is but a legend, the people unmotivated to change their status. This year, the Pheonixes have chosen a young mare to have the honor of being heir sacrifice, while in the backstreets of city a lot is drawn, the unlucky number being appointed to a strong, if stubborn pegasus, a member of the city guard.
And so our story begins.
A preview, or the "cover image" of a fanfiction I'm working on. =v=
